A quantitative comparison of amplitude versus intensity interferometry for astronomy

Astronomical imaging can be broadly classified into two types. The first type is amplitude interferometry, which includes conventional optical telescopes and Very Large Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). second intensity relies on Hanbury Brown Twiss-type measurements. At frequencies, where direct phase measurements are impossible, interferometry has an effective numerical aperture that limited by the distance from photons coherently interfere. Intensity other hand, correlates only photon fluxes thus support much larger apertures, but suffers a reduced signal due to low average number per mode in thermal light. It hitherto not been clear method superior under realistic conditions. Here, we give comparative analysis of performance relate this fundamental resolution limit achieved any physical measurement. Using benchmark problem determining separation between distant point sources, e.g., adjacent stars, short tutorial optimal estimation theory apply it stellar interferometry. We find for very small angular separations large baseline achievable more than compensate strength. also explore options practical implementations (VLBII).
